The Wegovy Diet Plan: What to Actually Eat, Skip, and Drink

Wegovy is the one GLP-1 that actually carries an FDA approval for weight loss, and yet no branded meal plan comes with the prescription — what works instead is eating in a way that protects the muscle a shrinking appetite would otherwise trade away first.

The short answer

No official Wegovy diet plan or downloadable PDF exists, even though Wegovy — unlike Ozempic — is FDA-approved specifically for chronic weight management: what Novo Nordisk actually offers is WeGoTogether, a free coaching app built for Wegovy patients, not a fixed meal plan. What works in practice is protein anchoring most meals, since appetite drops fast enough on this drug that muscle usually goes first unless protein is deliberately protected; fiber and fluid worked in gradually to counter slower digestion; and a short list of foods that tend to trigger nausea rather than a forbidden list. Alcohol isn't off the label outright, but it compounds the dehydration and slowed digestion Wegovy already causes, which is worth knowing before happy hour rather than after.

Is there an official Wegovy diet plan or PDF?

Because Wegovy actually carries the weight-management approval that Ozempic doesn't, it's a fair assumption that Novo Nordisk publishes a specific meal plan to go with it. It doesn't — not a downloadable PDF, not a numbered menu. What exists instead is WeGoTogether, a free app built specifically for people taking Wegovy rather than repurposed from Ozempic's diabetes-focused materials: weekly check-ins, articles on eating well and staying active, and access to a live health coach. That's real, on-label support. It just isn't a fixed diet plan you can print and follow.

Wegovy's own FDA label goes only as far as saying the drug is meant to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, without spelling out what that diet should look like. That's not an oversight — a single meal plan can't fit every body, dose, and appetite level, so the specifics are left to your prescriber, a dietitian, or a coaching app rather than printed on the box. For the general mechanics of eating on any GLP-1 — protein targets, meal timing, a sample day of eating — see the GLP-1 diet guide, which applies to Wegovy as directly as to any other form of semaglutide.

The Wegovy food list: what to eat first

Whatever else shifts about how you eat on Wegovy, the anchor is protein, and it has to come first at each meal rather than wherever it happens to fit. Appetite narrows fast on this drug, often within the first couple of weeks, and a shrunken appetite tends to burn through its available calories on whatever's easiest to eat before it ever gets to the protein source. Building each plate around protein, then filling in around it, is the practical fix.

  • A protein-forward first meal that doesn't feel like effort — eggs, Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese cover a lot of ground when appetite is low
  • A protein source at each smaller check-in through the day, not saved for one big dinner your appetite may not show up for
  • A shake on days when chewing solid food feels like too much — liquid protein still counts

The fuller version of this — how much protein actually helps, fiber, and what a realistic day of eating looks like — lives on the GLP-1 diet guide rather than repeated here, since none of it is specific to Wegovy over any other semaglutide product.

Wegovy foods to avoid

This is a nausea-management list, not a forbidden one. Semaglutide slows how fast your stomach empties, so anything already slow or heavy to digest tends to sit there and cause trouble.

  • Fatty or fried food — fat digests slowest of all, and Wegovy already slows digestion further
  • Very sugary food and drinks — separate GI upset layered on top of slower digestion
  • Carbonated drinks — added gas in a stomach that's already emptying slowly
  • Large or fast meals — the volume problem, independent of what's actually on the plate

Alcohol belongs on a related but separate list, covered next. For the full picture of Wegovy's GI side effects beyond food choices — including which symptoms are routine and which need medical attention — see our Wegovy side effects guide.

Can you drink alcohol on Wegovy?

Nothing on Wegovy's FDA label prohibits alcohol outright. In SELECT, Wegovy's largest and longest safety trial, confirmed pancreatitis occurred at essentially the same rate in the drug and placebo groups, which is worth knowing before assuming the medication itself raises that specific risk. That's a different question from whether drinking on top of it is a good idea.

Alcohol is, independent of any medication, one of the two leading causes of pancreatitis. Layer that onto a drug that already slows digestion and blunts thirst cues, and a heavier night of drinking tends to land harder than it used to — more dehydration, more stomach irritation, a rougher next day. None of that is a hard rule against a drink here and there; it's a reason to go lighter than you might have before, especially if you have any personal history of pancreatitis, gallstones, or heavier drinking.

There's a perimenopause layer here too. Hormonal shifts in your 40s and 50s already change how your body processes alcohol on their own — a glass that used to be a non-event can leave you with worse sleep or a longer hangover than it did a decade ago. Wegovy's slower digestion and dehydration risk stack on top of that rather than replacing it, so less genuinely tends to feel like less at this stage of life, not just on paper.

Eating for muscle, not just weight loss, in your 40s

Appetite suppression on Wegovy isn't a neutral win if you're already in perimenopause. Estrogen decline is quietly eroding muscle on its own well before a GLP-1 enters the picture, and body-composition sub-studies from Wegovy's own trials confirm that a real share of the weight lost during treatment is lean mass, not only fat — a pattern seen across the GLP-1 class generally, not something unique to this drug. Eating less isn't automatically a problem; eating less without enough protein, on top of muscle that's already declining for hormonal reasons, is the actual issue worth managing.

This page stays on the food side of that question. For the research behind the muscle-loss finding and what actually protects lean mass during treatment — protein targets, resistance training, and how HRT fits in — see GLP-1 and muscle loss in perimenopause. For the wider perimenopause eating picture beyond this medication, see the perimenopause weight gain diet guide.

What does Wegovy actually treat — and why that changes the diet question

Wegovy carries two FDA approvals, and both are different from what Ozempic has. The first, and original, approval is for chronic weight management — reducing and maintaining lower body weight in adults with obesity, or with overweight plus at least one weight-related condition like high blood pressure or high cholesterol. The second, added after the SELECT cardiovascular outcomes trial, is for reducing the risk of major cardiovascular events — heart attack, stroke, cardiovascular death — in adults with established heart disease who also have obesity or overweight. Ozempic, the same molecule at a lower maximum dose, is approved only for type 2 diabetes; using it for weight loss is off-label.

That distinction is exactly why the diet question looks different here than it does for Ozempic. Wegovy's own approval requires it to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity — food isn't an off-label afterthought the way it can feel with a diabetes drug being used for weight loss. It's baked into what the FDA approval assumes is already happening alongside the prescription, which is part of why Novo Nordisk built WeGoTogether specifically for Wegovy patients rather than leaving eating support out of the picture entirely.

Where to get Wegovy with nutrition support built in

If the diet side of Wegovy is the piece you actually wanted more help with, the differences between providers show up less in the medication price and more in what's already included once you're enrolled.

WeightWatchers Med+ — Wegovy with dietitian access built in
Membership from $25 the first month on a 12-month plan, then $74/mo, plus separate Wegovy medication from $149/mo. Nutrition counseling is part of the program.
See WeightWatchers Med+

NovoCare is the cheapest way to the actual FDA-approved drug if you already have a prescriber and are comfortable arranging nutrition support yourself — WeGoTogether's coaching app is included at no extra cost, but there's no dietitian or clinician relationship bundled into the price. If brand-name isn't a requirement, which is true for many women using this medication, compounded semaglutide through a telehealth provider tends to cost less overall.

Fridays — dietitian sessions bundled into compounded semaglutide
$150/mo on a 12-month prepay, $249/mo month-to-month. Dietitian access and group coaching included, not sold separately.
See Fridays pricing

Mochi Health runs the simplest number on this page — $178 a month flat, with no dietitian bundled in — a reasonable choice if you'd rather handle the food side yourself or through this page.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Wegovy diet plan or PDF?+

No. Novo Nordisk doesn't publish a downloadable meal plan or numbered PDF for Wegovy, even though Wegovy — unlike Ozempic — is FDA-approved specifically for weight management. What it does offer is WeGoTogether, a free app built for Wegovy patients with weekly check-ins, eating-well content, and a live health coach, but that's ongoing support, not a fixed diet plan.

What foods should I eat first on Wegovy?+

Protein, built into each meal rather than added as an afterthought. Appetite narrows fast on Wegovy, and a small appetite tends to run out before it reaches the protein source unless that source comes first — eggs, Greek yogurt, or a shake on days solid food feels like too much.

What foods should I avoid on Wegovy?+

Fatty or fried food is the most consistent nausea trigger, since fat digests slowest and Wegovy already slows digestion further. Very sugary food, carbonated drinks, and large or fast meals round out the list — worth limiting for comfort, not forbidden outright.

Can you drink alcohol on Wegovy?+

There's no FDA label rule against it, and Wegovy's largest safety trial, SELECT, found pancreatitis occurring at about the same rate on the drug as on placebo. That said, alcohol is independently one of the two leading causes of pancreatitis, and it adds dehydration and stomach irritation on top of digestion Wegovy already slows — worth going lighter than before, especially with a personal history of pancreatitis or gallstones.

Does Wegovy cause muscle loss?+

Body-composition data from Wegovy's own trials shows a real share of weight lost during treatment is lean mass, not just fat — a pattern seen across GLP-1 medications generally. It matters more in perimenopause, when estrogen decline is already eroding muscle on its own; protein-first eating and resistance training are the main defenses, covered in full in our guide to GLP-1s and muscle loss in perimenopause.

What does Wegovy actually treat?+

Wegovy is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight plus a weight-related condition, and separately for reducing the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with established heart disease who also have obesity or overweight. Ozempic, the same molecule at a lower dose, is approved only for type 2 diabetes — using it for weight loss is off-label.

Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic for weight loss?+

They're the same active molecule, semaglutide, but Wegovy is dosed higher and carries its own FDA approval for weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction. Ozempic is approved only for type 2 diabetes, so using it for weight loss is off-label — a real, studied use, just not what the label covers.
